Well, life is full of surprises. Our July 26th interview with Kathryn Casey was NOT on the air due due to some strange occurance at Outlaw Radio's off-premises web-host -- or some such techno babble.
We cleverly recorded the interview just in case -- but the recording ALSO suffered some extraterrestial damage. Go figure. Either forces were conspiring against us, or the delay is all for the best. Ms Casey has bravely decided to return to the show THIS SATURDAY 2pm PDT.
Set your alarm, alert the neighbors. You will find out the shocking story behind the dismembered body in the bathrub, the woman who committed murder disguised as her sister, and how John McCain's wife keeps her dogs from peeing on the furniture. Yes, this is one you won't want to miss, trust us!
Kathryn Casey writes excellent and compelling true crime, and she also writes fiction that's every bit as engrossing as her non-fiction. She is obviously suffering from an overdose of talent.
I am thrilled and delighted that Kathryn Casey will be our guest LIVE this Saturday 2pm PDT on our Internet TRUE CRIME AND....radio show. You can listen live by clicking the LISTEN LIVE link on the show's website, http://outlawcrime.com.
If you have any questions or comments for Ms Casey, send them to us: firstname.lastname@example.org
Prisons are big in the United States. There are more people behind bars literally, and proportionally, than any time in our history. We have a higher percentage of our population in prison than any other nation. And, we keep building more prisons, in fact many locales lobby for new prisons as a tool of economic recovery. What are the actual numbers that put American prison populations in historical and international perspective?
Between 1973 and 2000 the rate of incarceration in the United States more than quadrupled. The International Centre for Prison Studies at Kings College, London now calculates the U.S. rate at 700 people per 100,000. There are now more than two million Americans behind bars. Add to that another four and a half million on probation or parole and three million ex-convicts. This trend shows no sign of slowing.
Although blacks account for only 12 percent of the U.S. population, 44 percent of all prisoners in the United States are black. This is NOT because 12% of the population (blacks) are responsible for 44% of crime.
The proportion of blacks in prison populations exceeds the proportion among state residents in every single state. In twenty states, the percent of blacks incarcerated is at least five times greater than their share of resident population.
The national war on drugs has perhaps been the primary factor behind the extraordinary rates at which blacks are incarcerated.
Drug offenses account for nearly two out of five of the blacks sent to state prison. More blacks are sent to state prison for drug offenses (38 percent) than for crimes of violence In contrast, drug offenders constitute 24 percent of whites admitted to prison and violent offenders constitute 27 percent
African-Americans are arrested, prosecuted, and imprisoned for drug offenses at far higher rates than whites. This racial disparity bears little relationship to racial differences in drug offending. For example, although the proportion of all drug users who are black is generally in the range of 13 to 15 percent, blacks constitute 36 percent of arrests for drug possession. Blacks constitute 63 percent of all drug offenders admitted to state prisons. In at least fifteen states, black men were sent to prison on drug charges at rates ranging from twenty to fifty-seven times those of white men.
In 2001, nearly 6.6 million people were on probation, in jail or prison, or on parole at year end. That number represents 3.1% of all U.S. adult residents or one in every 32 adults.
Don Woldman and I will discuss this situation, among other things, this Saturday 2pm PDT on our Internet radio show. Please listen.
I recently noticed that a pristine first edition of my book, MAN OVERBOARD, is now selling for $125US. Hey, I can do you better than that. How about a rare advance review copy never made available to the general public? Sure, it is not hardcover and it doesnt have the snazzy dust jacket, BUT it is far more RARE, and it is autographed to YOU by the author. Amazing, isn't it?
At this point you ask yourself, "how may I, puny mortal that I am, actually own this rare and wonderful book?"
SImple. You want it? It's $80. Email me at Burl@burlbarer.net if you want it. I take pay pal. It will be signed and mailed immediately.
If you want the $125 version -- pristine first edition -- let me know. I might have one around here somewhere :-)
Moving on, make sure you listen to my show Saturday 2pm PDT. I wont be sticking around for Matt's show this week because I'm going to the LAPD Gala event...the police protective league giant thingie. Very fancy shmancy. We have to be there by 5 or 5:30pm so when 3pm rolls around I have to head back to get all dressed as if I were respectable.
American Justice is not about justice. Ask any defense lawyer or hamstrung prosecutor under pressure to convict the accused even if they are blatantly innocent -- if you can make the case, you can win the case. It's not about what's right, it's a game. Sadly, the defendants are not seen as people but as game pieces in an overcrowded and chaotic system where prisons are an industry.
One recent guest on our show confirmed that when she was a prosecutor, she was instructed to prosecute someone even though the person was clearly innocent of the charges. It isn't the way it is supposed to be, it isn't the way we imagine, and most of us are never ever aware of just how insane the situation is until we find ourselves in the middle of it. This week, our first guest is a family man working in real estate who suddenly found himself surrounded by police and blocked by a SWAT team. "We've got you now," they exclaimed. "Got me for WHAT? I'm evaluating real estate!" Bottom line: he pleads guilty to something, anything to avoid protracted entanglements and knows he only has to seve 12 months and it all will be over. What happens in those 12 months will leave you drop jawed and stunned -- the abuse behind bars was nothing compared to what happened to his life andf family while he was gone -- thousands of dollars in fraud committed in his name, using his identification. "It was rather difficult for me to be driving a new Mercedes and buying a condo in Marina Del Rey while I was behind bars." Out now with his prison time behind him -- although he served almost a full year more than he was supposed to -- he holds no ill will. "I just want others to know what to expect if they get caught up in a criminal justice system that is more criminal than just."

Everyone is blogging -- but who's reading? There are so many fascinating blogs on the Internet, I'm always finding new people with new ideas, pithy comments and fascinating interests. But who reads THIS blog?
Tyepad does provide stats -- I can see the my post Electric Menorah gets lots of hits for some reason, that Mike Barer is a loyal reader, and people stumble upon this blog after doing google searches on a wide variety of topics -- they search for info on sex, drugs, Islam, Baha'i, more sex, my brother, my sister, my nephews, and folks who, well, just sort of show up. Comments? Well, aside from someone hyping a porno site somewhere in Eastern Europe, and DogsDontPurr's kind remarks about my damaged eyeball, the comment section has been as dry as Jethro's Pump (reference to Maverick episode GUNSHY), I also crank out the website for OUTLAWCRIME.COM the home page of my weekly Internet radio show. Please go there and make a comment. Despite VOX being in the Typepad family, VOX does not provide any stats at all! So, I don't know if anyone has ever even SEEN that site. Do me a favor -- visit www.outlawcrime.com and leave a comment. Even a HELLO would be nice. Oh, and please listen to my show on Saturday afternoon 2pm pacific time. You can listen live by clicking this link.
special guest LIVE on our show this Saturday is "the King of Sting"
Craig Glazer..... they actually called him by the same slogan as THE
SAINT -- Robin Hood of Modern Crime.
"We decided to rip off the
bad guys — we were pirates — we were good guys wearing black hats,”
Glazer says. “There were contracts out on me all over. I mean, the
Mexican mob wanted me dead, and the cops were closing in. I mean, it
was kind of embarrassing. We were making more arrests than they were.
They would find people walking around with handcuffs on them. We also
did stings as IRS agents and just took their cash.”
returned to Kansas and later went to work as an undercover agent for
notorious Kansas Attorney General Verne Miller. He also did prison time
in Arizona in the 1980s. His end game on the book deal, aside, of
course, from making money and a sequel:
“I don’t know if I’ll get a movie deal or not. What I really wanted to do is tell my story, and now I have.” LISTEN LIVE THIS SATURDAY 2pm Pacific Time by clicking this link, or
go to www.talkstreamlive.com and select our show from the list. Paris
Hilton is not on the show this week. We will keep you posted on when
she is showing up. There is no truth to the rumor that she is daing
Ryan Stiles. Ryan is happily married and Paris is maybe preggers.
