Detecting the Scam is not only a how-to guide on identifying the first signs of a scam, it also provides a glimpse into the mind of a scammer, identifying several elements that could prove hazardous to the scammer. A few of these include facing an equally skilled negotiator, the element of time, and the issue of ethics. For example, the more time individuals have to reflect, the more questions they are likely to ask, which could be the death knoll for the scammer.
Detecting the Scam reflects on the cheating culture of today's society. It emphasizes the lack of a "moral compass," as Friedlander puts it. On a holistic level, this book challenges each individual to find one's capacity for common sense, ethical sensitivity, and to be courageous enough to ask questions. Friedlander states it best when he says, "We would have to do the right thing, rather than doing simply what we have the right to do."
