Scott Hornoff was a newly-promoted detective with the Warwick Rhode Island Police Department in 1989. He was also, for a brief time, a suspect in a murder occurring in his city. After requesting and passing a polygraph exam, Scott was quickly eliminated, but some members of his department who believed he was guilty went to the Rhode Island State Police and Attorney General's Office with their suspicions. A modern day witch hunt ensued. With no physical evidence or eyewitnesses linking Scott to the crime, the State Police obtained an indictment based solely on speculation and conjecture. He was tried, convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison, enduring 6 1/2 years wrongfully imprisoned, fighting for his life through a motion for new trial, appeals, and DNA testing. Every avenue for relief ended in failure. It wasn't until the true killer came forward that Scott was declared innocent and released.
