Bo Dietl is larger than life, a living legend, an off the wall and off the cuff commentator with some often outrageous ideas.  That's what makes him so loveable. 

In 1998 Dietl's autobiography One Tough Cop: The Bo Dietl Story was made into the film One Tough Cop starring Stephen Baldwin as Bo Dietl.^[3] The plot in Abel Ferrara's crime drama Bad Lieutenant is mainly inspired by Dietl's 1981 investigation of the rape of a young nun.

Dietl played the detective who arrests Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's 1990 film, Goodfellas.

Dietl was an associate producer for The Bone Collector . Dietl plays himself in Scorsese's 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street.

Dietl is a frequent guest of Don Imus on the Imus in the Morning radio program on WABC radio. He appears regularly on Fox News Channel shows, including, Hannity, and Geraldo at Large. He had also appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The O'Reilly Factor, and had a guest-starring role on the NBC crime drama Law & Order.

 

In 2014, Dietl announced his intention to run for Mayor of New York City in 2017, initially intending to run in the Democratic primary^] against incumbent Mayor Bill de Blasio. In 2017, Dietl announced he would no longer be challenging de Blasio in the primaries, running instead as an independent,

On May 4, 2017, the Wall Street Journal reported that Dietl said he was hired by Fox News network management to discredit the harassment claims by former anchor Gretchen Carlson and former producer Andrea Mackris against Roger Ailes and Bill O'Reilly.

In my many years as a true crime writer and investigative journalist, I know that the best cops can think like criminals, and sometimes they are the same people.  The recent book Betrayal in Blue exposes the blatant criminality of Michael Dowd and Ken Eurell when they were in the NYPD. Those guys could think like criminals because they were criminals. 

I've also learned that most law enforcement officers and agents are fundamentally incapable of thinking as if they were major mobsters or small time crooks.  That's good news for them and their families. It is the very lack of criminal mindset that hinders investigations and often has well meaning and dedicated detectives spinning in circles.  [here comes a mixed metaphor/simile mash-up for which you must brace yourself like Jerry's Kids on Labor Day Weekend]..and chasing red herring down a dead end street into a box canyon constructed of false assumptions and erroneous preconceptions.

When it comes to any organized or disorganized crime investigation, you are blessed if you can get someone on the inside to teach you what's real and what's media hype, criminal exaggeration or the cops having it all wrong to begin with.

Example:  

More than thirty people were charged by federal authorities in a massive illegal gambling, money laundering, and extortion scheme tied to Russian organized crime, according to an indictment in the U.S. District Court Southern District of New York.

The operation allegedly involved two criminal organizations, which catered to millionaires, billionaires, and poker pros.

Dennis Flynn retired from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department at the rank of
Lieutenant after 30 years of distinguished service. As a member of the LVMPD’s Crisis Negotiation Team for 18 years, Lieutenant Flynn served nearly 10 years as the Team Leader. During his tenure, he has responded to over 1,000 hostage, barricaded, or suicidal critical incidents. Lieutenant Flynn has been the agency's lead instructor for Crisis Negotiations and he has attended the F.B.I.'s Crisis Negotiation course in Quantico, VA.

As a lieutenant, he was assigned to several areas including being the swing shift commander of the Las Vegas Strip, home to some of the largest hotels in the world which also receives over 30 million visitors annually. As a lieutenant, he has assisted the agency, county entities, and private business with its response to active shooters by designing and developing training exercises at the valley's county hospital as well as one of the city’s largest malls.Dennis Flynn retired from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department at the rank of Lieutenant after 30 years of distinguished service.  The LVMPD jurisdiction encompasses over 6,500 square miles and is populated by over two million residents. The agency employs over 4,000 employees.


He has extensive experience in all team positions, (primary negotiator, secondary negotiator, intelligence coordinator, intelligence officer, forward negotiator, tactical liaison, and team leader), on incidents ranging from stranger hostage situations, bank take-over robbery hostage situations, familial hostage situations, armed barricaded subjects, suicidal subjects, and jumpers.  Las Vegas has one of the busiest negotiation teams in the nation, averaging 50-80 callouts per year. 

 

Lieutenant Flynn has been the agency's lead instructor for Crisis Negotiations and he has attended the F.B.I.'s Crisis Negotiation course in Quantico, VA, as well as provided them with incident debriefs.  He has conducted training for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, (F.B.I.), Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, (A.T.F.), Henderson Police Department, Boise Police Department, (Idaho), Nellis Air Force Base, and the North Las Vegas Police Department.  He also had the opportunity to provide training and case debriefs to the California Association of Hostage Negotiators, (CAHN), the National Tactical Officer Association, (NTOA), the Calgary Canada Negotiation Seminar, the Baltimore Hostage Negotiation, the Chicago and Las Vegas F.B.I. offices, and to the Public Agency Training Council, (PATC).  He’s also been published in the NTOA's Crisis Negotiation magazine.

 

 

During Lieutenant Flynn’s career with the LVMPD, he has been awarded two Unit Medal of Valor Awards, a Meritorious Service Award, five Unit Meritorious Service Awards, five Unit Exemplary Service Awards, a Unit Community Service Award, and the Nevada Narcotic Officers Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award.  He holds a bachelor degree from the University of Oklahoma.
